Newick FC is situated in the heart of Mid-Sussex, based between Haywards Heath, Lewes & Uckfield. With over a century of history, Newick FC currently have 2 teams playing in Robert Gray & Co. Mid Sussex Football League Division 2 and 5. We are a family based club and have become rejuvenated under the Chairmanship of Mr. Robert Furzer or Mr. Newick.
Formed in 1887 when the original committee included two members of the Baden-Powell family, who have strong links with Newick village. The club’s early history is not well documented but the first recorded success was in 1953 when they gained promotion to Division 2 of the Mid Sussex Football League. Their next success was 10 years later when the Second team won Division 5. In 1967 Newick won its first cup competition, the Mowatt Cup, which it has since won a further three times.
In 1977 after another 10 year wait Newick won the Edgar German Cup, this was the beginning of the clubs best period. The following year in 1978 the club won an amazing five cups, including the Montgomery and the Mid Sussex Junior, but the fixture backlog caused by so many cup games meant that the side just missed out on the league title ending the season as runners up. The following year they concentrated on the league and achieved promotion to the Premier Division by winning the Division one title in their first season. Newick consolidated their position during their early years in the Premier Division before becoming champions in 1986 and runners up on three other occasions.
In 1995 the Second team won a league and cup double by winning the Stratford Cup and Divison 5. The backbone of this side then moved into the first team and after taking a few years to settle the club had another successful period. In 1999 they won the Mowatt cup, Liverpool Arms cup and were runners up in Division one. In 2003 they won the Montgomery cup and were runners up in the Sussex Junior Cup. 2004 saw the club win the Allan Washer League cup and a 4th victory in the Mowatt cup. In 2005 the second team had a fantastic run in the Mid Sussex Junior cup reaching the final and were very unlucky to lose to a Willingdon side 2 divisions above them.
After the loss of a number of senior players, Newick’s first team dropped from the Premier to division two last year and the 2nd team finished mid table in divison 5. This has given the club a good base to build again and with the new young players that have signed for the club this year both teams are looking forward to a successful season.
