Pickering Bowling Club

Pickering is a beautiful market town on the edge of the famous North York Moors. The bowling club sits within the Recreation Ground sporting complex which houses Pickering Town FC, Pickering Town Cricket Club and various other sporting facilities including darts and pool. It is only a 5 minute walk from the main town centre.

Pickering Bowling Club was founded in 1912.   The bowling green was sited within the walls of Pickering Castle, which must be virtually unique in the game of bowls.  The club played at the castle site until 1926, when they moved to a new green at the corner of Ruffa Lane and Kirkham Lane.

This site was also temporary, for in 1947 the club was given notice to quit by North Yorkshire County Council who required the land for road widening.   A house now stands on what is left of the Kirkham Lane site, aptly named The Old Bowling Green.

The club now had to find another site and Pickering Recreation Ground Trustees came to the rescue.   They owned two unused tennis courts adjoining Mill Lane which were just the right size.

A new green was constructed and completed in 1948, and is the present location of the club.
